The newly-approved weight-loss medication Semaglutide, marketed under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy, has garnered attention for its impressive results in reducing body weight and improving cardiovascular health in patients with Type 2 diabetes. With obesity rates projected to rise in India, Semaglutide offers a promising solution to this growing health concern. According to Dr. Misra, Semaglutide can help individuals lose up to 15-20% of their body weight, a significant result not achievable with other interventions aside from bariatric surgery. While other weight loss drugs exist on the market, Semaglutide has proven to be the most effective, particularly for individuals with a history of obesity and related health issues. Dr. Misra suggests that the drug should be prescribed to those who have not seen significant results with diet and exercise due to their weight and related joint pains. Semaglutide may just be the weight-loss “magic bullet” that India needs to combat its growing obesity crisis.
According to Dr. Misra, the diabetes drug, Ozempic, should not be the primary solution for treating obesity. Furthermore, he predicts that the medication may be expensive in India when it becomes available in the next few months, likely costing between Rs 8000 to Rs 9000 per month. Additionally, it may cause unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea in the first few weeks. Dr. Misra recommends that the drug should only be prescribed to three specific categories of people: those who are obese and have related disorders like diabetes or fatty liver disease, those who are unable to lose weight through traditional methods, and those who are obese with uncontrolled diabetes despite medication. He emphasizes that the medication should not be given to everyone who is overweight or obese.

According to a report by Insider’s Anna Miller, business magnate Elon Musk attributed his weight loss and improved health to “fasting” and taking the diabetes drug semaglutide, which is sold under the brand name Wegovy. In October 2022, Musk tweeted that he was taking this particular brand of the drug. Musk has previously described semaglutide as helping him get “fit, ripped, and healthy.”
During an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast in January 2023, comedian Chelsea Handler revealed that she took the diabetes drug semaglutide without realizing what it was. According to Handler, her “anti-aging doctor” prescribed it to her, saying that it was good for losing weight. However, when Handler mentioned feeling nauseous and taking something called semaglutide to a friend who was also using the drug, her friend informed her that semaglutide is sold under the brand name Ozempic. Handler ultimately decided to discontinue her use of the drug.
