Kamaru Usman defeated Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 251

UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman matched a record help by Georges St-Pierre after his win over Jorge Masvidal.

This was the main event of UFC 251 as Masvidal ended up replacing Gilbert Burns. Burns tested positive for Covid-19 just a week before the fight, and Usman’s long-time rival Masvidal stepped up.

The fight wasn’t really a grand affair as expected. Usman dominated Masvidal right from the go and used the cage and clinch to his advantage.

The clash might not have been a memorable one, but Usman got the job done. Usman also matched a record held by UFC legend Georges St-Pierre with 12 consecutive wins in the Welterweight division.

Usman’s last loss came in 2013 and he wasn’t in the UFC back then. The Nigerian Nightmare was beaten by Jose Caceres in CFA 11, but he has been on a 16-fight win streak in all promotions since.

This certainly is a great record held by Usman and he could extend it further and break GSP’s mark should he win one more Welterweight clash.

That would certainly cement his legacy in the UFC and in the MMA world.

UFC 251 also breaks a record

Ariel Helwani also shared another record that was broken by UFC 251. The MMA journalist highlighted that this set the single-event record with the most fight time.

It eclipsed Fight Night: Werdum vs Tybura by almost three minutes and it last for 3 hours, seven minutes and 27 seconds.

All three championship fights on the main card went to the final round while only the first one ended in the first round itself.

The early prelim card saw all four fights go to the final round too while two of the four fights on the prelim card went all the way.

The three champions coming out of the event were Kamaru Usman, Petr Yan and Alexander Volkanovski.

There are more events planned on Yas Island, and it will be interesting to see how they go.
