Baker Mayfield is very confident about facing his former team in week 1 of the upcoming season of the NFL.
Baker Mayfield was recently traded to the Carolina Panthers from the Cleveland Browns. His long wait to get out of Cleveland finally got over, and now he has a chance to have a fresh start.
The Carolina Panthers are set to face the Cleveland Browns in week 1 of the new NFL season, and it will be a huge day for Mayfield. Baker Mayfield has already said that he has marked that date, and is ready to take revenge on his former team.
Baker said, “I’m not going to sit here and be a robot and tell you that’s not one I’ve marked on the calendar already. One, that’s not who I am. To me, it’s about winning games. Whoever we have marked on the schedule, I’m going to try to win.”
He added, “Obviously, this one has a little more history and personal meaning, but for me, it’s about winning and setting the tone for the rest of the year, and however I can help this team do that, I’m going to do.”
The fans on Twitter were quick to react to Mayfield’s comments. Here are some of the best reactions to what the former Browns said about facing his former team in week 1.
Baker Mayfield is ready for a new phase of his career
Baker Mayfield was the former No. 1 overall pick. He knows that he is a good quarterback, otherwise, he wouldn’t have been drafted first. Even though things didn’t end the way he wanted in Cleveland, he was able to change the trajectory of the franchise.
Now he is in Carolina and is ready to start a new phase of his career. Talking about it, Baker said, “To me, it’s ready for a fresh start first and foremost. I’m extremely grateful for the four years I had in Cleveland, it’s a great football town. It’s the start of my career, however long, God willing, it will be. I’m thankful for it.”
He added, “A lot of ups and downs, a lot of things I learned, but when it came down to it, it was wanting a fresh start, wanting to be with a coach and a GM that truly wanted me, . . . and just wanting the same thing, and that’s to win football games. “
Baker needs to earn his spot for the starting quarterback of the Panthers
The General Manager of the Carolina Panthers has already made it clear that it isn’t certain that Baker is the starting quarterback yet. He needs to earn his place. The Panthers now have three candidates to be the starting quarterback.
Despite the widespread belief that Baker Mayfield would start at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, he still needs to prove himself worthy of the position. Sam Darnold, his rival, is a threat.
They both competed against one another to be chosen first overall in their respective drafts, and they will compete against one another to start as quarterbacks for the Panthers. Given that Baker has had a more successful career than Darnold, it is anticipated that Baker will ultimately be chosen.
Even if Baker is able to get the starting quarterback role at the start of the season, he’ll need to show consistency. Sam Darnold and rookie Matt Corral will be in the hunt for the role of QB1. Having such competition around the starting quarterback position will ultimately help the Panthers. Hopefully, they will be able to have a successful season this year.
