Throwback: Jon Jones taken to the limit by Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165

UFC 165 saw Jon Jones defend his Light Heavyweight title against Alexander Gustafsson and the fight has been included in the UFC Hall of Fame

The UFC Hall of Fame added another great fight by including the UFC 165 clash between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson.

The announcement was made during the UFC 248 broadcast and the UFC 165 fight was the main event at the Air Canada Centre in 2013.

Jones came into the clash on a nine-win streak while Gustafsson also came in with six wins on the spin.

The clash is regarded as the greatest in the light heavyweight division of the UFC and will be included into the ‘Fight Wing’ of the Hall of Fame.

The Swede wasn’t seen on the same level as Jones, but he more than proved to be a challenger for the title.

Gustafsson’s six-win streak was great and he took the fight to the champion.

Jones just about pulls through

The Swede started the fight like a house on fire. Jones, later on, said he was surprised by the footwork of the former UFC star.

Gustafsson also tagged Jones several times in the first three rounds. The Swede was also the first fighter to ever take down Jones in the UFC.

While things looked bad for Jones at UFC 165, the champion dug deep in the fourth and fifth rounds.

Jones pulled out all the stops in the final two rounds to end up as the victor, but it could have been different had Gustafsson put up a bit more in the final two rounds.

The American, Jones, is back at the top of the world and is the Light Heavyweight champion currently.

Jones has just one loss to his name in the UFC, but has had several run-ins with the law. The 32-year-old also has been suspended for various violations. However, Jones is considered as one of the greatest ever in the promotion.

Jones has 26 wins, 1 loss and 1 no-decision in his career while Gustafsson had a great record coming into UFC 165.

However, things changed after that loss to Jones and the 33-year-old lost four of his next seven fights.

He had other chances to win the UFC Light Heavyweight title but lost to Daniel Cormier and Jones later on.

The Swede’s last fight came on 1 June 2019 against Anthony Smith. Gustafsson lost to Smith and announced his retirement from the Octagon.
