Derwin James, an All-Pro safety for the Los Angeles Chargers, was ejected from the game against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night after delivering a devastating helmet-to-helmet hit on wide receiver Ashton Dulin. The hit occurred in the second quarter of the game.

In the instant that followed the collision, James was flagged, following which he was transported to the blue medical tent and then walked to the locker room. After the game, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley stated that James was participating in the team’s concussion protocol. In addition, Dulin was able to walk himself to the locker room before being diagnosed with a concussion and was taken out of the game as a result.

Speaking about the play, Chargers HC Brandon Staley said, “I thought that he tried to lead with the shoulder, It’s a play where they obviously laid the guy out and in a tough position, which is their fault, not ours, and Derwin made an aggressive play. And we all know that Derwin’s not gonna try and do that to anybody…”

The play started with 5 minutes and 19 seconds left in the second quarter when Colts quarterback Nick Foles attempted to throw a ball to Dulin in the flats, but the pass was incomplete. James did an excellent job of reading the action, but then he charged Dulin with the crown of his helmet, which looked to make contact with Dulin’s head and jaw region.

James, who has been selected to the Pro Bowl three times, made three tackles and an interception before he was sent off the field. In 13 starts thus far this season, he has recorded 109 tackles and two interceptions.
