Wolves should sign Moritz Bauer on loan to add cover for Matt Doherty

According to Sky Sports, Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested to sign Stoke City right-back Moritz Bauer in January.

The same report claims that Wolves want the 26-year-old Austrian as a back up for first-choice right-back Matt Doherty.

Bauer fell out of favour under former Stoke manager Gary Rowett and is yet to make a league appearance since September. The Austrian made 15 appearances for the Potters in the second half of the last season in the Premier League but he has just played thrice in the Championship this term.

Born in Switzerland to parents of Austrian descent, Bauer started his professional career with Swiss club FC Winterthur and made his move to giants Grasshopper in 2011 where he played for five seasons before making a switch to Russia with Rubin Kazan. The 26-year-old represented Switzerland at the youth level but he switched allegiance to represent Austria at the senior international level, making his debut in 2017 and has earned 5 caps so far.

Standing at just a shade below 6ft., Moritz Bauer is known for his calm and composed nature as a full-back, even though he has considerable attacking prowess.

The Austrian has a pretty sound positional sense and is adept at reading the game in the air as well as off the pitch. Furthermore, he is a decent enough passer who sets up attacks with accurate long-balls and he also has the ability to supply quality crosses into the box.

To put things into perspective, Wolves can definitely add much-needed cover Matt Doherty by signing the Austrian on loan for the second half of the season. Nuno Santo has the services of someone like Ruben Vinagre in the left-wing back position to provide cover for Jonny Otto Castro but Wolves are likely to find themselves in a big hole should Doherty be sidelined with an injury.

Dominic Iorfa is another viable option but the manager is unlikely to call upon the youngster’s services given that he hasn’t featured for ages in the first team.

Doherty has been one of the standout performers for Wolves in the Premier League this season, with the Irishman contributing equally to both attack and defence. Bauer might not be as good as him but he can certainly fill in the void in case of an emergency.

Wolves are 8th in the standings and they continue to be in the reckoning for a Europa League spot. However, signing Moritz would certainly boost their chances of doing the same.

Nuno Santo and Wolves have done a tremendous job as a promoted team in the Premier League and the can cap off a wonderful season by finishing in the top ten. While a striker remains a necessity for the club in January, they should not hesitate to add more cover at the back as well to avoid a potential burn out towards the crunch end of the season.
