The 28-year-old placekicker was born in Newnan, Georgia. He was raised by well-educated parents. Lutz went to Northgate High School in his hometown and it is the place where his ignition towards football was turned on. Apart from that he also exposed himself towards soccer and cross country. During his senior year, he represented his school in the first round of Georgia AAAA football playoffs, but his team couldn’t go beyond the second round of that tournament which ended his high school football career.
Wil got admission to Georgia State University and where the next phase of his football career started. During the 2012 season, just after playing four games for Georgia State, Lutz became the placekicker for his team. His aggression on the field helped him score 4 field goals out of all 7 field goal attempts for his team in that season. Including a season’s longest field goal covering 40 massive yards against Rhode Island, which made him the “kickoff specialist”.
But he didn’t stop there, he continued his terrific form in the 2013 and 2014 seasons also. In 2013 he improved his goal conversion rate to 67 per cent and even more during the 2014 season to a nearly impeccable 88 per cent. The fearless lad played as the punter and placekicker in the 2015 season, where he ended up entering into the record books. Lutz made the second-best season average in school history that year, with his best career figures of 11 points in a game against Texas State.
