Why John Stones to Everton would bolster their defence

According to The Sun, Everton are interested in signing Manchester City defender John Stones in a cut-price deal in the summer.

Stones, 26, joined Manchester City from Everton in a £48m deal and was expected to go on to establish himself as one of the best centre-backs. However, he has not really progressed at the Etihad Stadium, with injuries and inconsistency hampering his progress. The English man has fallen down the pecking under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

So far, in an injury-plagued season, Stones has made just 10 starts and 2 substitute appearances in the Premier League, whilst also featuring in just one Champions League game this season. As things stand, leaving Manchester City in the summer for regular first-team action would make sense for him. Despite returning to the squad since the games restarted, he has not been used so far.

Everton lack depth in their backline

Carlo Ancelotti’s men have managed to put in some fine performances since the restart of the season.

However, they have been inconsistent throughout the campaign and to rectify that, the manager needs to bring in reinforcements ahead of next season. One key area the manager should focus on strengthening is the backline. They have lacked depth in central defence, with just three centre-backs available at the manager’s disposal.

Michael Keane and Yerry Mina are the two first-choice defenders but they haven’t been convincing throughout the campaign. Young Mason Holgate, who is a defender by nature, has also been used as a defensive midfielder on several occasions. And he has been at his best.

However, the Toffees have already conceded 47 goals in just 32 league games so far. They also don’t have adequate options in their defensive ranks. Thus, making a move for Stones would be a viable option for the club.

The English international, who has just two years left on his contract with City, has struggled with form and fitness throughout the season. He started the Carabao Cup final against Aston Villa but came under fire at Wembley. He was responsible for Villa’s goal.

Regardless of his problems in the last couple of seasons, Everton should make a move for him in the summer. He is just 26 and has time to revive his career. Once he is free from injuries, he could be able to prove himself. And under the guidance of Ancelotti, one of the best tacticians, he could iron out his flaws and fulfil his potential.
