Sting remains one of the greatest wrestlers ever but why did he leave WWE?

The world of wrestling got a huge shock when Sting made his AEW debut and also signed a multi-year with the promotion.

The 61-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers ever and his mere appearance on AEW caught everyone off guard.

Sting was last signed with WWE and made his debut for the promotion in 2014. He was also involved in a WWE title clash against Seth Rollins but things didn’t go his way.

The 61-year-old had never appeared on WWE during his entire career but all that changed in 2014. That in itself was possibly the biggest wrestling moment of 2014 but Sting wasn’t seen much after his battle against Rollins.

Why did Sting leave WWE?

Sting was with TNA for several years but things started to fall in place for his WWE career in 2014. A piece was put on Sting on WWE.com and suggested that the star might still have his best days ahead of him.

WWE started selling Sting merchandise and the Icon made his WWE debut at Survivor Series 2014 that cost the Authority a win.

He was involved in a couple of other fights but then got a chance to win the WWE World Heavyweight title against Seth Rollins at Night of Champions.

Sting suffered a serious neck injury in that clash after a turnbuckle powerbomb and had to undergo surgery.

The Icon didn’t appear in WWE for a long time before he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. The 61-year-old made a few other appearances in the next three years but didn’t have much of a wrestling role.

WWE stopped selling Sting merchandise in October 2020 and Sting was out of a contract with WWE back in May 2020.

Sting could have left WWE since he still wants to feature in more matches. In an interview with JBL, he claimed that he hasn’t still undergone such a surgery that would end his wrestling career.

That interview took place a couple of years ago and it will be interesting to see what his role on AEW is.

The Icon didn’t really wrestle much on the show, but that was enough to send people crazy.
