WAS STEVE HARWELL AN ALCOHOLIC?

Smash Mouth lead singer, Steve Harwell, died on Monday at the age of 56. The manager of Smash Mouth and Harwell, Robert Hayes, confirmed the news of the singer’s demise while speaking to USA Today

“Steve Harwell passed away this morning Sept. 4, 2023 at his home in Boise, Idaho. He was surrounded by family and friends and passed peacefully and comfortably,” Hayes said in a statement.

The manager added that the singer was alongside his family and resting at home. He was with his fiancee and hospice care personnel, and the manager added that the family were looking for privacy at this time.

Smash Mouth were one of the biggest pop-rock bands during the late 90s. Hits like “All Star” still are used in movies and TV shoes, and they also had some amazing covers such as “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby.”

Harwell also has had his fair share of heartbreaks. In 2001, his son, Presley, passed away from acute lymphocytic leukaemia at the age of 6 months.

Harwell then created a medical research fun in the name of his child.

Did alcohol have a role to play in Steve Harwell’s passing?

Steve Harwell suffered from quite a few health conditions, it seems. In 2021, he had decided to retire from the band after a performance at a beer and wine festival.

His manager also confirmed that Harwell had been dealing with issues for the past eight years due to cardiomyopathy. This heart disease also created quite a few serious issues for the Smash Mouth star.

Harwell was diagnosed with Wernicke Encephalopathy and cardiomyopathy in 2013, due to his alcoholism.

Heart failure was one problem arising from these medical conditions and the Smash Mouth singer also suffered from speech and memory issues.

TMZ, who had reported the news of Harwell’s condition turning serious, added that the rock star was battling alcohol abuse throughout his life. Furthermore, Steve Harwell was also in the final stage of liver failure.

Harwell’s health issues saw him leave the band in 2021, and he was replaced by Zach Goode, with the band continuing.

The band released a message on Twitter honouring Steve Harwell and adding that the singer was a “larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle.”
