“Modern day warrior”, “King”- Twitter explodes as Khabib Nurmagomedov wins BBC Sports Personality’s World Sport Star of 2020

Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated a lot of big names to win the World Sport Star of 2020 at BBC Sports Personality

UFC legend and undefeated Lightweight Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, had another award to add to his collection after winning the World Sport Star at BBC Sports Personality for the year 2020.

Khabib had just one fight in 2020 but he came out on top by defeating Justin Gaethje. This was his 29^th fight and was another dominant display against someone who many thought would dethrone the Russian.

This turned out to be Khabib’s final fight as he retired in an emotional evening. The Russian was fighting just months after his father passed away and emotions got to him.

Nevertheless, Khabib is considered as one of the greatest MMA fighters of all-time and there is hope, from Dana White, that he would be back for his 30^th fight.

As for the BBC Sports awards, last year’s winner was marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge. The runner won the London Marathon for a fourth time and also completed a marathon for the first time in history under two hours in October 2019.

Khabib beats several big names

This was a public vote but the MMA legend beat a lot of top stars to win the award.

LeBron James, who won the NBA title with the LA Lakers last year, was one of the nominees. Golfer Dustin Johnson was another one in the running while Irish boxer Katie Taylor was also on the list.

The other names that made it to the list included Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis and French football Wendie Renard.

Khabib held onto his UFC belt for 932 days and had three successful title defences. He also finished his career with eight KOs, 11 submissions and 10 decisions in his 29 fights.

It is to be seen if he ever makes a return but many MMA fans were ecstatic that The Eagle won this accolade.

I dont even like the guy but this is definitely deserved. Wish you guys recognised this sport when bisping won the belt but hey. And for all the people saying they dont know him. Hes one of the biggest stars in the fast growing sport in the world.

Khabib is one of the greatest we have ever seen in the Octagon and it will be interesting to see if he does make a return.
