Justin Gaethje lost the chance to win the UFC Lightweight title after being defeated by Khabib Nurmagomedov

UFC 254 didn’t go the way of Justin Gaethje as he was defeated in the Lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The American was expected to put up a tough fight against the undefeated Khabib, but it turned into a one-sided affair.

Gaethje was choked out while Khabib also retired from the business. While the Russian claimed he had retired, Dana White hasn’t vacated the title and believes Khabib will be back soon.

It is to be seen what happens with Khabib but Gaethje has some grand plans for the belt. The American was speaking to the Schmo and wanted to meet the winner Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.

McGregor and Poirier are former champions in the division and it is one of the big fights from 2021.

However, Gaethje wanted to fight for the belt but only believed he should face the winner of McGregor vs Poirier only if he got a win:

“Like you said, I am number one. Of course, I want to fight for the f****** belt, that is why I am here.

“Poirier and McGregor are going to fight soon and I want to fight the winner of that. I wholeheartedly believe that you should be coming off a win to fight for the belt so my job now is to get a win.”

Training with the right people

Gaethje believed that the only way to fight for the title would be if someone had won the previous fight. It will be interesting to see who the American could fight next but he is ranked #1 in the division and is one of the best in the promotion.

The former title-challenger has been training with UFC Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. The Nigerian-American has been excellent since picking up the title and Gaethje claimed that it was great working with like-minded people who want to beat the top of their game and win titles.
