Jan Blachowicz and Israel Adesanya had a hilarious ‘bodyguard’ misunderstanding at UFC 259

UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz retained his belt for the first time at UFC 259 when he beat Israel Adesanya in a fight that went the distance.

Before the match, many predicted that the fight will not go for 5 rounds. In fact, Adesanya backed himself to get a KO win.

But that wasn’t the case. The difference in size between ‘Izzy’ and the Pole was evident but the former showed great resilience to last the full 25 minutes.

The scorecard was very heavily in Blachowicz’s favour, with him winning at least 4 rounds in every judge’s books, and outright winning 3 rounds in all three scorecards.

Dana White was not impressed as he believed this was a close fight. The UFC president lashed out at the judges scoring and couldn’t believe what had transpired.

But it was something that happened after the fight that had everyone laughing, including the two fighters.

The champ and the contender talked inside the octagon before the result was announced. The Nigerian-born Kiwi praised Blachowicz’s guard throughout the match.

But Blachowicz heard it as ‘body guard’ and asked Izzy if he will pay him good money to be his bodyguard.

The misunderstanding was cleared by Izzy who then said he doesn’t have any need for a bodyguard. This was followed by the two breaking into laughter.

This was the end of a 20-fight win streak for Adesanya. The UFC middleweight champion was taken apart comfortably in a dominant performance from Jan.

The weight difference was evident, but Jan’s fight IQ was on full display throughout the 25 minutes. He comfortably took rounds 2,4, and 5 in what was a champion’s display.

It now remains to be seen what Izzy does next. A return to middleweight looks likely but if he has his mind set on being a double champ, he could stick to 205 for a little while.
