Daniel Cormier fought Jon Jones and shared some advice for Israel Adesanya
Adesanya and Jones have been at each other’s throats for a while but both have moved up a division. Jones wants to become the Heavyweight Champion while Adesanya fights for Light Heavyweight gold at UFC 259.
DC was speaking to the media and was asked if Adesanya should fight against Jones and in which division.
Cormier spoke of his own experience of fighting Jones twice in his career and claimed that Adesanya should keep an advantage and possibly fight him at a lower weight class:
“These guys seem to be on a collision course. I know what that feels like, I know what Izzy feels, it is frustrating.
“You want to get your hands on the guy but ultimately if you are Team Adesanya, you don’t give him [Jones] all the advantages.
“If he has gotten so big, you make him come back down. We didn’t fight at Heavyweight when I was undefeated.
“He said it and I did it, so I went down to the weight class he was performing in. Izzy needs to make sure he doesn’t give any advantages and he won’t.”
Cormier added that Adesanya was smart and so was his team. He believed that Adesanya would not dance to Jones’ tunes and would do what he wants.
A reporter also asked if Adesanya was going learn from the wars between DC and Jones. However, the now retired Cormier joked that Adesanya didn’t need to learn anything from him:
“I don’t think he learned from me. There is nothing to learn from me. I did it all wrong, I went to the playing field that he wanted and I lost the fight.
“Don’t learn from me.”
It will be interesting to see if Jones and Adesanya do meet soon. Chael Sonnen, another UFC legend, picked Adesanya to win the Light Heavyweight title on Saturday.
However, he also backed Adesanya to make a huge announcement and expected Izzy to follow Jones too.
