Ex-ECW wrestler and UFC fighter Paul Varelans tested positive for Covid-19 a week ago

Former UFC fighter Paul Varelans is fighting for his life after being diagnosed with Covid-19 a few days back.

Varelans made his MMA debut 25 years ago in July 1995 when he appeared on UFC 6. He made the semi-final of the tournament and went on to be eliminated at that stage again at UFC 8 in 1996.

He managed to make the final of UFC 7, but lost in the main event to Marco Ruas. ‘The Polar Bear’ even wrestled in ECW, featuring in the Hardcore Heaven event in June 1996.

He was choked out by ECW superstar Taz in a ‘shoot fight’ but later revealed that he agreed to lose via submission.

He retired from professional fighting in 1998, boasting a 9-9 record MMA record in just 3 years of professional fighting. His last professional MMA fight at Rings Holland: The King of Rings, where he floored Dick Vrij in round 2.

Paul Varelans first revealed that he had Covid-19 on December 12th, when he posted his status on Facebook.

The former UFC fighter later posted a day later that his situation was worsening. He compared the pain to fighting a guy who “specialized in kidney punches and they never stop coming”.

The unfortunate news of Varelans being placed on a ventilator was revealed by UFC co-found Art Davie, who posted an update on his Facebook account.

One of his close friends posted that the 51-year-old Varelans is currently in a medically induced coma at a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

We pray for a quick recovery for the UFC pioneer and hope that he comes out victorious in this fight.
