The Philadelphia Phillies suffered a major setback against the Padres on Saturday. Their superstar outfielder and reigning NL MVP, Bryce Harper, suffered a fractured thumb.

Harper was hit by a pitch from San Diego Padres starting pitcher Blake Snell. Bryce was immediately in pain and left the game after screaming at Blake Snell. However, Harper later realized that it wasn’t the intention of Snell.

Bryce Harper was having a good season so far despite injuries surrounding him. He had averaged .320/.385/.602 batting line with 21 doubles and 15 home runs so far in the season. This will be a huge loss for the Phillies, as they were looking to make a push toward the playoffs following a poor start to their season.

Speaking after the game, Harper said, “Things happen for a reason. Everybody says that. This reason sucks right now, but at the same time, it is what it is. I’ve got to be positive. I’ve got to be positive for the guys in here. I know they’ll pick up the slack.”

Bryce Harper is disappointed for the franchise and the fans in Philadelphia

It seems likely that Bryce Harper will miss significant time following this injury. A broken thumb does recover quickly, and it’s going to impact the Phillies’ chances of making the playoffs.

Harper himself was very disappointed for the team and the fans. He said, “I’m just really bummed for the organization, the guys, the city of Philadelphia, the fans. I love running out there and playing every day. Definitely bummed.”
