Branham started playing basketball in his high school days at St. Vincent–St. Mary. He was a star player in his high school days and won matches for his team many times. At the end of his senior year, Branham averaged 21.3 points with 5.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. On seeing his performance, he was named the Ohio Mr Basketball.
