Here’s a look at the 2023 Mexican GP preview, schedule, live stream details and our predictions for the race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez

The Mexican Grand Prix made its first appearance as an unofficial race in 1962. It later became an official championship event from 1963 to 1970 and then again from 1986 to 1992. This historically significant race was originally held on November 4, 1962, at the Magdalena Mixhuca circuit, which was Mexico’s inaugural international racetrack. This circuit, much like Monza in Milan, Italy, is situated within a city park in Mexico City. The Grand Prix returned to Mexico City in 2015. The 2023 edition is scheduled to occur from the 27th to the 29th of October.

The Mexican Grand Prix has undergone a recent name change, now known as the ‘Mexico City Grand Prix’. In 2020, the race was originally scheduled for November 1 under this new name but had to be canceled on July 24 due to travel restrictions in the Americas, which affected all races in North and South America. Consequently, the 2021 event marked the first occurrence of the Mexico City Grand Prix. The good news for fans is that this race is expected to remain on the Formula 1 calendar at least until 2025.

Mexican Grand Prix 2023 Preview and Track

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, situated in Mexico City, Mexico, is a 4.304 km (2.674 mi) racetrack that pays tribute to the racing talents of the Rodríguez brothers, Ricardo (1942–1962) and Pedro Rodríguez (1940–1971). The track was named in their honor shortly after its opening, following the tragic death of Ricardo Rodríguez during practice for the non-Championship 1962 Mexican Grand Prix. Unfortunately, nine years later, Pedro, Ricardo’s brother, also lost his life while competing. In 2015, the circuit once again became the host for the Formula One Mexican Grand Prix, after previously hosting the event in two separate periods, with a different layout, the most recent of which was in 1992.

Located within the Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City, a public park in the southeastern part of Mexico City, this racetrack is owned by the city’s government. However, it is currently operated under a concession agreement by Corporación Interamericana de Entretenimiento (CIE) through its subsidiary, OCESA. CIE is responsible for organizing various races at the circuit, including NASCAR and Desafío Corona events, and it also rents the circuit to other entities like race organizers, automobile clubs, and amateur track enthusiasts. Controversy has arisen over the fees charged for using the circuit, as they are notably higher compared to those of other former Formula One venues.

In anticipation of Formula One’s return in 2015, the Grand Prix circuit underwent a significant renovation led by Hermann Tilke. This revamp included extending and reshaping the front straight to accommodate a new media center and paddock. Notably, the series of distinctive curves between turns 7 and 13 saw substantial changes, with many of the sweeping, high-radius turns being replaced by fixed-angle turns. These modifications led to a reduction in the circuit’s length to 4.304 kilometers (2.674 miles), making it 170 meters (560 feet) shorter than the previous Grand Prix layout.
