Fernando Alonso isn’t in the 2020 F1 season but backed one team and driver to create history

The 2020 F1 season will not see Fernando Alonso racing in an F1 car, but he expects a lot of history to be made.

Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton both won the titles last season, and there has been talk of Ferrari and Red Bull challenging the domination of the Silver Arrows.

Red Bull have looked good in pre-season testing while there are doubts over Ferrari. Mercedes have the chance to win a seventh title in a row while Hamilton can wrap up a seventh overall title too.

Although the Mercs were great on day one of testing, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for them. They have had some engine issues in the past, but Alonso backed Hamilton and the Silver Arrows to celebrate come the end of the campaign:

“I think so. The tests seems that Mercedes is still quite competitive and you know they show again enormous potential on the develop inside and on the progress from one year to the next.”

Alonso added that F1 is unpredictable, however, he still claimed Mercedes were the favourites to lead the standings:

“As a starting point, I think they are the favourites and when you have Lewis [Hamilton] in the car and Mercedes with the potential that they have you know they have to be No.1 favourites.”

Alonso’s plans for this season

The triple crown is the one things that Alonso has been aiming for over the past few years, and he will be back in Indy Car to attempt winning the Indy 500 again.

Last season was a disaster but this time around, he has teamed up with McLaren to concentrate on the special race.

Alonso is a former F1 champion and also won Le Mans, and winning the Indy 500 would be an incredible achievement.
