The UFC decided to cut Yoel Romero in a shocking move that caught many off guard

The talk of the UFC circuit for the past week has been how they cut Yoel Romero from the roster.

Romero, who was one of the biggest names in the promotion, was released by the UFC despite having three fights left on his contract.

The Soldier of God had lost four of his last five fights but all of those were against top contenders or champions.

Nevertheless, more was to come from Dana White who confirmed that 60 fighters would be losing their jobs.

Rachael Ostovich and Matt Wiman, who both fought recently on separate cards, were also released and Stephen Thompson had his say regarding this.

Wonderboy was speaking on the Schmozone podcast and sent a warning to the rest of the roster regarding this:

“That surprised me cause Yoel is a popular guy, is a tough guy and he’s fought some of the bets guys in the world.

“You look at the guys they lost to, I mean these guys are monsters. So it did surprise me a little bit.

“They are pushing this Contender Series and they got a lot of guys coming in from that which is why I think the UFC is so saturated with fighters at this point.

“We will see what the UFC does, we will see who they are going to cut. If they are willing to cut Yoel Romero, there is no telling who else they are going to cut.”

Plans for future UFC exit

Thompson also spoke about what he would have done if he was released by the company. The 37-year-old claimed that he didn’t want to fight for another promotion as the UFC was the best in the fight game:

“For me, if I am not fighting for the UFC, which I think is the best fighting promotion in the world, got some of the best fighters in the world.

“If it was me on the other end of the stick, If I was Romero, I would be done. I got more things that I could do like running the school and of course, YouTube, which mean more to me than the fight game.”

Thompson added that his real love was teaching and he would be doing that once his fight career would come to an end:

“I fight for the honour and glory, I love to compete. But my real love is teaching so my mind is already made up.

“As long as I am fighting, I am going to fight my behind off but until then you gotta give it my all. I will still be here teaching and still be part of the martial arts.”

Thompson will fight Geoff Neal in his next fight and it will be interesting to see how Wonderboy does in a tough fight.
