Why Manchester City should sign Darwin Nunez to replace Sergio Aguero

According to The Telegraph (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester City are thinking about bringing in Darwin Nunez as a successor to Sergio Aguero. The City boss recently signed a new two-year deal and one of his priorities is to find a long-term replacement for the club-record scorer.

The Argentine is out of contract in the summer and if a new deal cannot be agreed by then, the club might have to accelerate their plans of signing another forward.

Born in Artigas, Uruguay, Nunez began his footballing journey at the academy of La Luz and spent time with San Miguel de Artigas before joining Penarol. He made his senior debut for the Uruguayan giants in November 2017 at the age of 18. The striker went on to feature 22 times for the first-team, scoring four goals in the process. Last summer saw Nunez make the jump from Uruguay to Spain, as he signed for La Liga 2 side UD Almeria. In his debut season with the Spanish second division side, the 21-year-old made a strong impression.

That led to a move to SL Benfica. Since then, he has taken off spectacularly with 11 goal contributions in just 11 games. The youngster was a regular of the Uruguay youth team and is now a part of the senior team as well, with four caps and two goals so far.

Nunez can succeed Aguero at City

Darwin Nunez may not be a household name in footballing circles yet but the way he is progressing, it won’t be long before they do. The Uruguayan is slowly making big strides in European football and every big club is starting to take notice.

He has posted phenomenal numbers in the opening few weeks of the season and looks set to continue in the same way. Manchester City should really consider the possibility of signing Nunez from Benfica in January or even next summer. He looks the real deal in terms of a forward and can play the role of a playmaker as well.

Sergio Aguero is slowly entering the twilight years of his career and whether or not City like it, they eventually have to replace him. The sooner the better, because his injuries are becoming more frequent and Gabriel Jesus is the only other forward in the side. Nunez looks like a good successor to Aguero and City should start making efforts on a transfer soon.
