Zhang Yufei’s big break came at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics when she was just 16. Yufei won five medals in total, which included 3 Gold medals and 2 Silver medals.

At the 2018 Asian Games, four years later, Yufei won two Gold medals – in the 200m freestyle and the 4×100 medley relay.

She qualified for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. On the 25th of July, 2021, Yufei earned a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly, finishing second by 0.05 seconds to Canada’s Margaret Mac Neil.

Four days later, on the 29th of July, 2021, Yufei won her first Olympic Gold medal in the women’s 200m freestyle event beating Regan Smith of the USA by almost 2 seconds. She also broke the Olympic record en route to winning Gold.

The very same day, she won her second Olympic Gold medal. This time in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay. In an extremely close encounter, the Chinese successfully saw off the heated challenge from the United States, beating them by 0.4 seconds.
