The Minnesota Timberwolves selected LaVine 13th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. He signed a rookie scale contract with the team on July 8, 2014. LaVine appeared in 12 games in the first five games of the 2014-15 season. When Ricky Rubio was sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury, LaVine replaced veteran Mo Williams as the starting point guard.
Rubio’s return in February 2015 limited LaVine’s playing time. Williams, on the other hand, was traded that month, which expanded his options. LaVine won the Slam Dunk Contest at the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend. He became the NBA’s youngest champion since Kobe Bryant in 1997, when he was 18 years old.
On June 22, 2017, LaVine was traded to the Chicago Bulls for Jimmy Butler and the rights to Lauri Markkanen (the seventh pick in the 2017 NBA Draft).
On July 6, 2018, the Sacramento Kings made a four-year, $80 million offer sheet to restricted free agent Zach LaVine. Two days later, the Bulls exercised their right of first refusal and matched the Kings’ offer sheet to LaVine.
