The Minnesota Timberwolves selected LaVine 13th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. He signed a rookie scale contract with the team on July 8, 2014. LaVine appeared in 12 games in the first five games of the 2014-15 season. When Ricky Rubio was sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury, LaVine replaced veteran Mo Williams as the starting point guard.

On June 22, 2017, LaVine was traded to the Chicago Bulls for Jimmy Butler and the rights to Lauri Markkanen (the seventh pick in the 2017 NBA Draft).
