Collins started playing basketball in his high school days at Bishop Gorman. He was a star player in the team and helped his team to win four times state championships in a row. At the end of his senior year, Collins averaged 17.3 points with 14 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He also got an opportunity to play for the United States in the FIBA 3×3 Under-18 Championship. But they were defeated in the quarter-finals by France.
On seeing his performance, Collins got scholarships from different colleges. But he joined Gonzaga University by rejecting the offers of other colleges. He did not get enough opportunities to play during his freshman year. At the end of his freshman year, he averaged 10 points with 5.9 rebounds over 17.3 minutes of playing time per game. Collins played a vital role in entering their first national championship game by scoring 14 points with 13 rebounds against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Collines entered into the 2017 NBA draft by skipping his three years of college.
Collins was drafted by the Sacramento Kings as the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. But after some time he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. Due to an injury, he missed the whole season. He was with the Blazers for 3 seasons and performed well for them. In 2021, Collins signed a contract with the San Antonio Spurs and was sent to play in the G League till he recovers completely. He debuted against the Houston Spurs and scored in a double-digit number. As of now, everything is going well for Collins with the Spurs.
