As a junior, Tillman averaged 13.9 points with 9.7 rebounds per game. Tillman did not feel comfortable at Forest Hills Central and moved to Grand Rapids Christian High School. After entering into Grand high school, as a junior Tillman averaged 16 points with 10.4 rebounds. At the end of his senior year, Tillman received various offers from different colleges.
Tillman wished to play for Michigan State and rejected the remaining offers. He debuted for Michigan against North Florida and scored four points with three rebounds. Tillman averaged 2.8 points with 2.6 rebounds in the 35 games he played. He reduced his weight from 125 kg to 113 kg and shocked the NBA community. His 21 points against Charleston Southern marked his highest career score. After completing his junior season, Tillman decided to enter the 2020 NBA draft.
Initially, he was drafted by the Sacramento Kings as the 35th overall pick but later he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on the same night. He scored a massive 18 points with 14 rebounds against the Denver Nuggets and marked his career-high score.
