Drew McIntyre was concerned about crowd reaction after Edge Royal Rumble return

Speaking to Notsam Wrestling (h/t Ringside News), WWE Superstar Drew McIntyre has revealed that he was concerned about fans turning on him when Edge returned in Royal Rumble 2020.

Edge made his miraculous return to WWE after nine years at Royal Rumble last year. The Rated R Superstar had seen his career brought to a premature end due to a serious neck injury. Having recovered and cleared for action, he showed up to perhaps one of the biggest pops ever from the audience.

Even though, Edge made his return, he was not the one who won the Royal Rumble, with Drew McIntyre emerging as the top dog. McIntyre enjoyed a solid run in the rumble, kicking off by eliminating then WWE Champion Brock Lesnar before sending Roman Reigns over the top for the win.

However, the Scottish Warrior has now admitted that he had some concerns if fans would accept him as the winner after seeing Edge come back.

“There was a lot going on at that time, for sure… But the Rumble itself, finding out, one, I’m taking out Brock Lesnar, and the structure of the match, he’s going to be the absolute beast and that I’m going to be the one to take the beast down, was absolutely unbelievable. But to actually be winning it, on top of that? And then you find out that Edge is coming out towards the end as well. Oh… No negative thoughts crossed my mind until it was time for Edge.

“I was in the corner with AJ Styles, he was choking me and I made sure I had a clear view of the entrance way… I heard the reaction and I went ‘Oh, I’m so happy for him! What a guy… Wait a minute?! The people might turn on me, we’ve seen this happen before!’ That’s what crossed my mind at that exact moment. He made his entrance and we got towards the end. It was Roman and Edge. And Roman did me a solid, by the way, being the one who took out Edge towards the end. I heard the boos and I said ‘Screw this, let’s just keep powering through’… That could have gone bad, but it went well.”

Having won the Rumble, McIntyre went on to beat Lesnar at WrestleMania 36 and enjoyed a fine run as the WWE Champion.

Edge gets Royal Rumble win in 2021

As for Edge, his return may have ended in elimination from the Rumble, but the UItimate Opportunist did go on to win the over-the-top-rope extravaganza earlier this year, eliminating former tag-team partner and rival Randy Orton.

However, unlike McIntyre, Edge did not go all the way and become a champion though, as he was beaten by WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns in a triple-threat bout that also had Daniel Bryan.
