Drew McIntyre shares why had the fans’ support back at Royal Rumble 2020 unlike Roman Reigns or John Cena
One of the most inspiring comeback stories on WWE is that of Drew McIntyre. The Scotsman was released by the company but came back to win the WWE title.
He did that by first winning the Royal Rumble in 2020, where he was by no means the favourite. But he eliminated Reigns after performing a Claymore to win the whole thing.
That earned him the ticket to WrestleMania 36 where he challenged Brock Lesnar for the WWE championship- and won.
And throughout this journey, much of which was ruined by Covid-19, the Scotsman said that he had the support of fans.
Talking to Sam Roberts on the Notsam Wrestling Podcast (h/t WrestlingInc), McIntyre answered why he had the fans go ballistic for him after he won the Rumble, a reaction which even Reigns or John Cena couldn’t manage.

And according to him, it is because he’s more relatable for WWE fans than the other two.
“When it comes to the relatability thing, I think the key for me is I went through a bunch of hell. The fans knew I had been through some cr*p, had to overcome some crap, even as a 6’5, 270 lbs guy. They know this guy never gave up on his dreams, he’s fighting for his dreams. They could relate to that.”
That could be the case for Cena but maybe there is more to the situation with regards to Roman Reigns considering ‘The Big Dog’ had a battle with a life-threatening ailment not long back.
Nevertheless, ‘The Chosen One’ went on to have an inspired run with the belt, even fending off greats like Goldberg, only to lose it to The Miz at the Elimination Chamber this year.
But he will be looking to claim what’s his when he takes on Braun Strowman and Bobby Lashley in a triple threat match for the title at WrestleMania Backlash.
