WWE Fastlane 2021 air date, match card, and rumours

While the shadow of WWE WrestleMania 37 looms large, we still have another PPV event to get past before the Showcase of the Immortals takes place as WWE Fastlane 2021 is set to take place in less than a week’s time.

Fastlane was first aired in 2015 and has been an annual presence on the WWE calendar up until 2020. The event was cancelled to make room for WWE’s Super ShowDown which went down in Saudi Arabia.

But Fastlane makes a return for 2021 and here’s everything you need to know about WWE’s latest PPV event on the Road to WrestlMania.

WWE Fastlane will take place on 21st March 2021, Sunday. It will broadcast from the WWE ThunderDome at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The PPV event will be the first one to stream via Peacock’s WWE Network channel. It will also be the last pay-per-view that fans can access on the standalone version of the WWE Netwok.

Match Card

With less than a week to go for the big main event, WWE have, so far, announced just three official matches for the Fastlane PPV.

Roman Reigns (c) vs Daniel Bryan (Universal Championship)

It has been quite a gripping tale between Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan, who gets another shot at the Universal Championship after being demolished by the ‘Tribal Chief’ last month at the Elimination Chamber. The match came about after Bryan defeated Jey Uso in a singles steel cage bout on SmackDown.

Edge, who is next in line for the Championship opportunity after winning the Royal Rumble has managed to insert himself in the mini-feud as well. The Rated-R Superstar will battle Uso in a singles bout on SmackDown to determine who will be the Special Enforcer for the big bout at Fastlane. Much intrigue heading into this one.

Big E (c) vs Apollo Crews (Intercontinental Championship)

Having floundered with little direction as a tweener for quite some time, Apollo Crews has gone full heel in recent weeks and has his sights firmly set on Big E and his Intercontinental Championship.

Crews had put the IC title holder out of action after unloading on him with the steel steps and did so again this past week on SmackDown when Big E made his return. WWE seem to be intent on pushing Crews at the moment but will it lead to Big E’s title run getting cut short? Less than a week before we find out.

Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler (c) vs. Sasha Banks & Bianca Belair (Women’s tag team championship)

Another edition of WWE’s shoe-horned tag team partners taking on the reigning Women’s tag champs in Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. The involvement of Reginald The Sommelier has already muddied the waters.

And following Tamina and Natalya’s victory over the challengers this past week on SmackDown, there is a chance that the veteran duo also gets inserted into the Championship bout, turning it into a triple-threat battle. Unnecessary distraction ahead of Belair and Banks’ WrestleMania battle for the SmackDown Women’s gold.

Rumours

As things stand, with just three official matches, the card for WWE Fastlane 2021 is quite thin. Expect WWE to add more matches this week on Raw and SmackDown.

Sheamus and Drew McIntyre battled hard on Raw

One bout that seems a dead-on cert for the PPV is Drew McIntyre vs Sheamus. The two best friends turned foes were involved in a No Disqualification Match on Raw this past week which ended in a referee stoppage. The two could be given a chance to end their feud at Fastlane later this week.

At the time of writing newly-crowned WWE Champion Bobby Lashley has no opponent while Raw Women’s Champion Asuka may not be involved again amid reports of an injury.
