Wolves Opinion: Moritz Bauer can be a good back-up for Matt Doherty

Towards the end of January, Sky Sports reported that Wolves were interested in signing Moritz Bauer on loan from Stoke City. However, a move to Molineux failed to materialize for the out-of-favour Austrian international and he stayed put in the Championship.

Bauer joined Stoke from Russian giants Rubin Kazan last January and established himself as the club’s first choice right-back in the Premier League.

He started 15 games in the second half of the previous season, as Stoke were relegated to the Championship. Despite facing relegation, Bauer committed his future to the club by signing a new contract last summer.

However, things haven’t quite gone according to the script for Bauer this season. The 27-year-old has started only four games for the Potters in the Championship this term, falling out-of-favour under former manager Gary Rowett.

And things haven’t changed for the Austrian under Nathan Jones either, with the new manager favouring youngster Tom Edwards on the right.

To put things into perspective, Wolves should definitely reignite their interest in Bauer as it seems quite evident that the player doesn’t have a future at his current club. Nuno Santo still hasn’t found a back-up for Matt Doherty at right-wing back and the Austrian perfectly fits the bill at Molineux.

Wolves have been flying high in the Premier League this season on their return to the top-flight following a six-year absence. Their bravery and resilience have endured them to the hearts of the fans, with the newly-promoted team putting in some top-quality performances against the big clubs.

Nuno Santo’s men currently 7th in the standings and they are still in the race to finish the season as the ‘best of the rest’ outside the top-six. If Wolves can keep up their good work in the final few weeks then they are set to compete in the qualifying stages of the Europa League next term.

Wolves have adequate cover in all areas of their squad but right-wing back in an area that is in need of investment this summer. Matt Doherty has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season, contributing with 3 goals and 4 assists from 30 appearances.

However, Wolves do not have any cover whatsoever for the Irishman in that position, and although they didn’t face any crisis this time around, they might not have the same luck next season.

Bauer doesn’t have the numbers to flatter but he can be a decent addition to the squad.

An offensive-minded player who can fit in at right wing-back, the Austrian has good pace and flair on the ball and contributes a lot with his work-rate, patrolling up and down the pitch to contribute equally to both attack and defence.

With that being said, Wolves should add more depth to their squad and Moritz Bauer might prove to be a useful squad player at Molineux.
