Wolves Opinion: Why Nuno should go all out to sign Amadou Diawara?

According to a report from Football Italia, Wolves wanted to sign Napoli midfielder Amadou Diawara in January. Napoli wanted around €35m for their midfielder which might have seen Wolves back out from shelling out that money in January and hence, a move didn’t materialise.

Upon promotion to the Premier League last year, Wolves have been an exciting team to watch this season.

As the season has progressed, their confidence has grown leaps and bounds as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sit pretty seventh in the table. They are gunning for a place in Europe and if they achieve that, it’ll be a phenomenal for the Midlands outfit.

Wolves showed a lot of ambition by backing Nuno to the fullest in the summer transfer window. And if they are to challenge for a spot in the top six next season, Nuno needs to add a couple of players over the summer. A midfielder has to be at the top of Nuno’s wishlist, with Joao Moutinho set to turn 33 in September and Ruben Neves a target for Manchester United.

Even though Nuno will do everything in his powers to keep hold of Neves, it’s better to have a potential replacement lined up. To put things into perspective, Wolves should rekindle their interest in Amadou Diawara and sign him this summer.

Diawara, 21, was a key player under Maurizio Sarri but has played just 19 times since Carlo Ancelotti took charge at the Stadio San Paolo last summer. He is currently out injured but regardless of Jorginho joining Chelsea in the summer transfer window, the Guinean hasn’t got much chances under Ancelotti as he would have liked to.

That could turn Diawara’s head if Wolves come calling ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

A defensive midfielder by trade, the 21-year-old excels in breaking up play and using his passing range to keep things ticking over for his team. He is a highly-energetic customer who uses his intelligent positioning, body and energy to influence the game.

The Guinea international is a very good passer of the ball but tends to keep things simple in the middle of the park. A hard-working, combative midfielder with solid technique, the highly-rated Diawara would form a formidable midfield unit alongside Neves and Moutinho.

Verdict

Bringing in someone as good as Diawara would undoubtedly bolster Wolves’ midfield options. Also, the Guinean is just 21 which means he has a lot of room for improvement and Nuno could be the right manager to unlock his high potential at Molineux.
