Wolves Opinion: Why Marcos Rojo will be a brilliant fit at Molineux?

Back in November 2018, a report from the Sun claimed Wolves were interested in a January swoop for Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo.

Marcos Rojo, 29, has played just four games across all competitions for Manchester United this season, with the Argentine enduring another injury-hit campaign at Old Trafford. Seeing the 29-year-old struggled with injuries, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was looking forward to offloading the defender in the winter transfer window, claims the Telegraph.

However, that didn’t happen and Marcos Rojo is still a United player but there is a big possibility of seeing him leave the club at the end of this season. That being said, Wolves should rekindle interest in Rojo and sign him to bolster their defensive options.

Wolves have been a joy to watch for the neutrals due to their fantastic counter-attacking style of football. And while Wolves’ attacking players have got the credit they deserve, their defenders’ consistent performances have gone under the radar.

Conor Coady, Ryan Bennett and Willy Boly have done a fantastic job in a three-man backline, conceding just 39 goals thus far, which is less than what Manchester United and Arsenal have leaked. But what Nuno’s side lack is depth in defence, with midfielders Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss used as cover for the aforementioned trio.

That should change this summer as the Midlands outfit are in desperate need of depth in defence, and Nuno would do a wise job by signing Marcos Rojo.

Ever since Rojo joined United from Sporting Lisbon, he has endured injury problems. He has rarely enjoyed a sustained run in the side due to injuries and as things stand, the 29-year-old remains behind the likes of Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly in the pecking order.

The Argentine’s career has stuttered in recent years and a move to Wolves would give him a chance to rejuvenate it. Rojo is a strong, robust and no-nonsense defender who never shies away from jumping into challenges and tackles. He’s a bit clumsy and rash when it comes to tackling but overall, the 29-year-old can hold his own against the most physically dominant forwards.

The former Sporting Lisbon ace will give Nuno a lot of tactical flexibility as Rojo is capable as playing in central defence, as a left-back and left wing-back. Not only will he add quality to Wolves’ backline but also bring competition for the current crop of defenders.

Verdict

Surely, the signing of Rojo would give Wolves an added injection of experience, confidence and versatility. Hence, Nuno must not hesitate to splash the cash on the Argentina international and sign him from Manchester United.
