Why Leeds should return for Todd Cantwell in the future

According to Leeds Live, Leeds United were interested in signing Todd Cantwell right before the end of the last transfer window. However, Norwich stood firm on their £20million valuation. That led to Leeds pulling out from the race but it is being reported that Norwich are regretting their stance. Meanwhile, Cantwell has started the season poorly which makes Norwich all the more concerned.

Born in Dereham, Todd Cantwell joined Norwich’s youth system at the U-10 level and rose through several age-group ranks at Carrow Road before making his senior professional debut against Chelsea in an FA Cup tie back in January 2018.

The highly-rated youngster was subsequently loaned out to Fortuna Sittard for the remainder of the 2017-18 campaign. And, Cantwell caught the eye with a string of impressive displays in the Dutch second-tier.

Cantwell went on to play a bit-part role for the Canaries during the 2018-19 season in the Championship, scoring once in 24 appearances, as Daniel Farke’s side secured promotion to the Premier League as the outright winners of the second division. The 22-year-old, though, established himself as a key player for Norwich last season following their promotion to the top-flight.

The England U-21 international started 30 times in the PL, with 40 appearances across all competitions last term. He contributed with 7 goals and 2 assists. But that wasn’t enough to save the Canaries from relegation.

Why Leeds should try to sign Cantwell in the future

It has been a mixed start to Leeds’ life back in the Premier League. While they got a few good results in the opening month or so, they have suffered quite a few losses from thereon. This has resulted in the club dropping to 15th place and Bielsa should be worried about the season ahead.

Leeds have got a decent squad to survive the Premier League. But one of the positions that needs reinforcement is the left wing.

Currently the club has Jack Harrison and Ezgjan Alioski as left-sided players. It is clear that they need another talented youngster for that area and Cantwell could be exactly that. The winger was very impressive last season, which was his first season in the top-flight.
