Why Wolves should avoid making a move for Edon Zhegrova

As per Daily Star (h/t Birmingham Mail), Wolves are interested in signing Genk winger Edon Zhegrova, who currently plies his trade with FC Basel in the Swiss League.

Zhegrova, 21, came through the ranks of Standard Liege and St. Truiden’s youth system and joined Genk in the summer of 2017. Though he was impressive in the few starts he made for the Belgian outfit, he was sent on loan to Basel in February 2019.

The youngster has, since then, become an integral member of the club and also helped them win the Swiss Cup earlier this year by providing a crucial assist. He has been impressive in the past few years and is one of the best young talents in Europe.

Wolves, meanwhile, have been brilliant throughout the campaign despite struggling on some occasions. Nuno Espirito Santo has taken them to a greater height since their promotion to the Premier League two years back.

They are currently 6th in the league standings, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. The Midlands club have been excellent in every department. The attacking unit has scored 41 goals so far with Raul Jimenez leading the line. He has scored 13 goals so far and has also received support from the other forwards.

The defence also has done a decent job by conceding just 34 goals, which is not high according to their standards. They have a well-balanced team and look set. Though they have been knocked out of the domestic cup competitions, Nuno’s men are still in the race for the Europa League title.

However, the manager should focus on strengthening the squad by bringing in reinforcements to key areas. And they can be safe in the new season if they have the required depth in every department.

Zhegrova would be surplus to Wolves’ requirements

Wolves have a plethora of attacking talents in their ranks, especially in the wide areas. Diogo Jota, Adama Traore and Pedro Neto have been regular to the side and they also brought in Daniel Podence to boost their options in the wide areas.

Jota and Traore have been brilliant, combining to contribute 10 goals and 8 assists from the wings. And Neto has also played a significant role this season. Winter signing Podence is also capable of doing the damage when he receives his opportunities.

In that regard, signing Zhegrova would be a waste of resources for the club. He may be at his best but he would be left without game time if he joins them. At this moment, the Kosovo international needs to be playing regularly to progress in his and that would be difficult at Wolves.

He is also still inexperienced at a top league and that could see him struggle to settle to the conditions of the Premier League. And a move in the summer could prove to be costly for the youngster. Thus, Wolves should avoid making a move for Zhegrova.

Verdict

With plenty of attacking talents in their ranks, the manager should focus on strengthening other key areas which would be helpful for them in the near future. Thus, signing Zhegrova in the summer would not be a wise decision.
