Why Wolves should avoid a move for Lazio’s Wallace

According to Lazio News (h/t Birmingham Mail), Wolves are set to make another move for Lazio star Wallace this summer.

The report suggests that the Brazilian looks to be on his way out of the Italian outfit and Wolves had a bid rejected for Wallace last season. It also claims that the Wolves are interested in him and looking to bring him to Molineux.

Profile

Born in Brazil, Wallace flourished through the ranks of Cruzeiro’s youth system and made just 3 appearances with the senior setup before Braga signed him in the summer of 2014. He was immediately sent on a two-year loan spell to Monaco, where he made 56 appearances.

He was then signed by Lazio in the summer of 2016 and spent three years with the Rome outfit before going on loan, this time to Braga. He made just 16 appearances last season across all competitions and was part of the squad which won the Portuguese League Cup.

Why Wolves don’t need Wallace

At the moment, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have a plethora of defensive talents in their ranks. Conor Coady, Willy Boly, and Romain Saiss have been brilliant at the back as they conceded just 40 goals last season, boasting the fifth-best defensive record in the league.

Apart from that, they have Ryan Bennett and young Max Kilman also in central defence. Roderick Miranda, who spent the last season on loan with Famalicao, is also available at the manager’s disposal.

Moreover, they have also signed Marcal from Lyon who is a left-back by nature but is accustomed to playing in a three-man central defensive role. In addition, they have also brought in promising youngster Ki-Jana Hoever from Liverpool, who can play as a centre-back as well.

Thus, it is unnecessary for the Midlands club to make a move for Wallace. The 25-year-old hasn’t been a regular starter in the last few years for Lazio, while he featured sporadically for Braga as well.

Signing him would only make Wolves waste their resources as he would eventually end up on the bench. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo has plenty of depth in the centre-back department as things stand. Plus, Leander Dendoncker has also done well in the centre-back role when called upon. And thus, there is no need for Wolves to bring in Wallace.

Verdict

With plenty of options available, it is clear that Wolves don’t require any more central defenders. Instead, they should look to strengthen other key areas and add depth to the squad. And they should refrain from any move for the 25-year-old Brazilian.
