WWE boss Vince McMahon doesn’t seem to be a fan of Cameo, Twitch and other creative outlets
The WWE world was hit hard by Vince McMahon as the boss sent out a message to all its talent.
Fightful and Wrestling Inc reported that McMahon isn’t happy with WWE stars using third party outlets possibly such as Cameo, Twitch and more.
McMahon has also asked stars to stop and shut such platforms in the next 30 days (October 2) and warned that the performers could be sanctioned or even fined or fired.
“Some of you are engaged with outside third parties using your name and likeness in ways that are detrimental to our company,” McMahon wrote in the letter per Wrestling Inc.
“It is imperative that these activities be terminated within the next 30 days (by Friday October 2). Continued violations will result in fines, suspension, or termination at WWE’s discretion.”
This would come as a bit of a blow to WWE but McMahon seems keen on protecting the characters that WWE has built.
A tough situation for stars
Many of the top WWE stars such as Zelina Vega, Lana, Xavier Woods and more stream their games.
More often than not, they use their WWE names and play out with their persona. Further, many have also set up YouTube accounts and upload several stories, so that outlet could be on the banned list too.
Further, Alexa Bliss and many others have taken to Cameo to create custom videos for fans. This is a great way to earn more money and it allowed the fans to get closer to the performers too.
However, McMahon banning this or asking them to stop in 30 days would be a huge blow to the stars.
WWE stars are contracted, but they often work as independent contractors too. However, McMahon has suggested that this is a step in WWE’s rebuilding phase as the company enters the next growth step.
The boss is right in suggesting that the characters used are owned by WWE and their trademark and property.
We saw such issues raise when Matt Hardy tried to take his Woken character from TNA to WWE and then to AEW.
However, WWE should have taken action a while back when such outlets were being used by their stars rather than react now when things are already big.
UpUpDownDown is one of the biggest gaming channels on YouTube with Woods hosting live sessions with other stars. Further, this is a great way for some of the smaller stars to make more money.
It will be interesting to see what happens next but there could be a pushback by the WWE stars.
