Why Arsenal would benefit by signing Aston Villa star Tyrone Mings

Arsenal are one of a number of Premier League clubs that are interested in signing Aston Villa centre-back Tyrone Mings, according to the Athletic (h/t Metro).

Mings, 27, came through the ranks of Bristol Rovers’ youth system before moving to Ipswich town and then to Bournemouth in 2015. However, after years of struggling for game time at the club, the player moved to Aston Villa on loan and thereafter, he was signed by Villa on a permanent basis in 2019.

The player has helped Aston Villa secure promotion to the Premier League and has been a regular ever since. He has put in some great performances over the last two years. For Arsenal, their defensive unit has been a cause of concern, with frequent injuries and errors.

The club must bring in reinforcements to their back-line as they hope to restructure themselves. Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings might be a really good choice.

The 27-year-old centre-back has been a consistent performer and has shown more confidence in recent times. Mings’ great performances last year also saw him earn a maiden national team call-up. The player has the ability to succeed and would be a decent addition to Mikel Arteta’s defence.

Are the Gunners right in deciding to sign him?

The player seems to be in his best years and it would be right for Arsenal to get the best out of him. And this would give Arsenal an additional player at the back as they aim to get back to the top in the top-flight.

But do Arsenal really require the player is a question that can be raised. Arsenal already have plenty of defenders in the likes of Rob Holding, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi, and Pablo Mari. They also have Calum Chambers, William Saliba and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

With these many options for Arsenal in the coming season, do Arsenal require another player is a big question. But having said that, an addition in the likes of Mings is definitely a decent addition to Arsenal, as none of the names mentioned above have been reliable enough.

Verdict

David Luiz has been visibly error-prone, while Sokratis seems to be out of favour under Arteta. Though Mustafi has improved of late, he doesn’t seem to inspire the sort of confidence the fans would have when watching someone like Virgil van Dijk. One would get the feeling that he is a ticking time bomb. Pablo Mari looks promising but Arsenal need a reliable partnership at the back.

Mikel Arteta might benefit by signing Tyrone Mings, who has proven to be solid for Aston Villa over the years.
