Why Tottenham should end Gedson Fernandes loan spell
According to Football.london, Gedson Fernandes is all set to leave Tottenham this January after hardly featuring for the club this season. The Benfica starlet joined Spurs mid-way through last season but is yet to nail down a place in the team. His loan spell was originally supposed to end at the end of this season but the club are likely to allow him to leave this month.
Fernandes has been given limited opportunities
When Tottenham signed Gedson Fernandes last season on a long-term loan, it was seen as a very good move. The youngster had impressed for Benfica in the season prior and he could play in a variety of midfield roles. It was a win-win for Spurs in every way.
Now the problem is, he has hardly been given game time. He made 12 appearances last season but he played just 61 minutes of league football in 7 appearances. Even this season, he has been given just two games. One in the EFL Cup, the other in the FA Cup with zero games in the league.
Spurs have depth in midfield and should let go of Fernandes
Spurs have quite a heavy stock of players in the midfield, with the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovanni Lo Celso, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Dele Alli all in their ranks. Even the established Alli is finding it hard to get games.
Let’s not forget, they also have the highly talented Oliver Skipp on loan at Norwich who could return and stake a claim for a spot in the side. It is pretty clear that there is no space for Gedson in the squad and Spurs are right to think about sending Fernandes back.

His progress is stalling and at 22, he needs much more game time than what has been afforded to him. It’s the best decision keeping in mind the player’s future and development curve.
Spurs can afford to go through the season without Fernandes and it wouldn’t hurt them much to allow him to return to his parent club. At Benfica, he will likely get more game time and Spurs should terminate his loan deal at the earliest.
