Why Thiago Alcantara would be a fantastic fit at Manchester City

According to SportBild (h/t Daily Star), Manchester City have entered the race to sign Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara ahead of the new campaign.

The report suggests that long-time admirers Liverpool are willing to pay €30m for the Spaniard. But City have offered better terms than that and could snatch the midfielder to Etihad. However, acquiring the services of Thiago will not be an easy task as they will have to face competition with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Born in Italy, Thiago spent time at four different academies before joining Barcelona’s youth system. He played for the Catalan giants under Pep Guardiola and went on to win several trophies with the club including four La Liga titles and a Champions League title.

In the summer of 2013, he was signed by Guardiola for Bayern Munich and since then, he has been an integral member of the squad. He has helped the German giants lift 7 league titles consecutively while also winning the German Cup four times so far.

He has represented Spain from the youth level and has made 37 appearances for the country. He is one of the best midfielders in Europe and has already won everything at club level, whilst still in the Champions League competition with Bayern Munich this season.

Thiago could be a replacement for David Silva in Manchester City’s midfield

Despite having a plethora of midfield talents in their ranks, City are set to lose one of their key players in David Silva, with his contract expiring. The Spaniard has been an integral figure in the squad and his departure will leave a huge void in the squad.

The likes of Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan are available at Guardiola’s disposal in midfield, apart from Kevin De Bruyne. However, signing another experienced midfielder would help them fill the gap left by Silva.

In that regard, signing Thiago would be a smart move by the club. The former Barcelona man has made 387 career appearances and still remains a vital member of the Bayern Munich lineup. He has won trophies continuously and would bring that winning mentality to City’s race for the title next season.

Moreover, he has already worked with Guardiola at two different clubs and the duo has already won several titles together. His inclusion would also provide them with the balance and added quality in midfield.

Verdict

At 29, Thiago has a few more years left to play at a higher level and City should make use of his best by signing him this summer. He can be a direct replacement for Silva in midfield and his experience would also come in very handy for the club in the next few seasons.
