Why Real Madrid should sign David Alaba

A report by Spanish outlet Marca claims that Real Madrid are highly interested in securing the signature of Bayern Munich defender David Alaba. The La Liga side will bide time and open talks with Alaba once the relationship between Bayern and Alaba completely breaks down.

Alaba’s team could ask for high wages and an agent’s fee. The conclusion of a renewed contract with veteran defender Sergio Ramos will have no impact on Madrid’s interest in Alaba, but it will determine the wages Madrid can offer. (h/t Marca)

Real Madrid have a good relationship with Bayern Munich and could count on it to conclude this deal. However, Los Galacticos will not bring out a blank cheque to sign the Austrian.

Real Madrid could use a versatile player like Alaba

Real Madrid currently have five players out injured in the defensive area of the field. Sergio Ramos, Nacho Fernandez, Alvaro Odriozola, Daniel Carvajal, and Casemiro are all on the treatment table.

Irrespective of the injuries, the Spanish giants can use an upgrade in the centre-back position. Club captain Sergio Ramos turns 35 in March and can only lead the defence for so long. His contract is also in its last 8 months, which would allow the 2010 World Cup winner to leave for free in the summer.

While Eder Militao is an able backup, the Brazilian is only 22 and will need time to be able to lead Madrid’s defence in the same fashion as Ramos. For a club like Madrid, depth at the back becomes important when chasing titles on all fronts every season.

In this respect, David Alaba can help Madrid solidify multiple positions at the same time. Alaba has played left-back, centre-back and defensive-midfield with great distinction during his time with  Bayern and Austria.

The Austrian can provide much-needed depth and quality at the back and can be a handy backup in midfield for Casemiro. Alaba can also fill in impeccably at left-back, a position that Madrid want to strengthen. Moreover, Alaba has not missed more than five matches for Bayern Munich through an injury in almost 5 years.

Verdict

The deal could ultimately boil down to the contract demands made by Alaba. While it’s claimed that Ramos’ situation will not have an impact on the deal, Madrid’s desperation to meet Alaba’s demands and transfer valuation could certainly increase if their captain does not renew his deal.

If Madrid can land Alaba, especially in January, then it would be a superb coup. Zidane would benefit from Alaba’s experience, quality and versatility, especially during an injury crisis in the club’s backline. A deal in the summer, however, makes more sense for Madrid, as they would be able to get the 28-year-old on a free transfer.
