Why Chelsea must sign Gonzalo Higuain and let Morata leave this summer

Chelsea have received a massive boost in their pursuit of Juventus and Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain. Reports suggest that the player is up for sale, following the Italian club’s move to bring in Cristiano Ronaldo. The 30-year-old is priced at around €55million and he could be up for an exit this summer.

Meanwhile, Alvaro Morata had a nightmarish Premier League debut season, following his £70m arrival at Stamford Bridge. He was touted to replace Diego Costa but the forward has failed to take that opportunity. In fact, he has often looked out of depth, especially in the second part of the season.

Let us compare the stats and attributes of both strikers and conclude as to why it would be wise for Chelsea to swap them this summer.

Comparing Higuain and Morata

Higuain scored 16 goals from 35 appearances in the league while Morata mustered 10 in 31 games. The latter missed 17 big chances which hampered Chelsea’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season. In fact, no one can forget his ordeal at the Emirates against Arsenal, as he missed a countless number of glaring goalscoring opportunities.

Morata, who currently earns wages in the region of £100,000-per-week, has left many Chelsea supporters frustrated. He tends to go down easily which neither helped him nor his reputation with the Premier League referees. In Higuain, the Blues can get a solid centre-forward in the mould of Didier Drogba. After all, the Argentinian is physically well-built and can shrug off centre-backs with ease.

Furthermore, the Higuain’s work rate has improved two-fold under Massimiliano Allegri, indicating the fact that he possesses the stamina to press high and work the channels when his team needs him to. Morata, on the other hand, often gets lost when asked to do the same.

Verdict

Looking at the above-mentioned facts, there is a significant difference between the two players in terms of numbers and the performances they put up last season. Based on that, it is quite sensible for Chelsea to sell Morata and get Higuain to increase their chances of winning the title the next term.

The latter will bring in experience, finishing prowess and the required physical abilities to succeed in the Premier League. For Morata as well, going back to Spain or Italy would perfectly fit his bill and help him regain his lost confidence.
