Why Santiago Arias to Everton would bolster their defence

According to Goal (h/t Liverpool Echo), Everton are interested in signing Atletico Madrid right-back Santiago Arias in the summer, with the Spanish outfit willing to sell him for €15m.

Arias, 28, came through the ranks of CD La Equidad Seguros’ youth system and joined Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2011. Two years later, PSV Eindhoven signed him and the defender made a name for himself in the Eredivisie, winning three league titles.

After making 172 appearances for the Dutch outfit, he moved to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2018 and immediately became a regular member of the squad. Though he did a decent job last season, the arrival of Kieran Trippier has seen the Colombian struggle for game time. Thus, Everton should make a move for Arias in the summer.

The Toffees, meanwhile have lacked consistency throughout the campaign and have struggled to put in a string of good performances. Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival saw them off to a good start but the results didn’t last long. Thus, the manager should make some changes to the squad if they are to progress in further campaigns.

Arias could add depth at right-back for Everton

One of the chief reasons for their downfall is the lack of stability at the back. Yerry Mina and Michael Keane have been inconsistent as the Toffees backline has conceded 46 goals in 31 games this term. And it is clear that they need to bring in defensive reinforcements.

Apart from that, the manager should also focus on strengthening the full-back position. Seamus Coleman and Djibril Sidibe are the only two right-backs available at the manager’s disposal. However, Coleman has battled with injuries, whereas Sidibe, who has done well, could return to France once his loan spell ends with the Toffees. Thus, a right-back is a must in the summer.

In that regard, signing Arias would be a massive boost for the squad. He has made 277 career appearances and has also got Champions League experience. He would definitely add depth to Ancelotti’s squad, whilst also bringing in a wealth of experience.

Verdict

At 28, Arias has a few more years left to play at a higher level. And Toffees are in dire need of full-backs to strengthen their backline. Thus, signing Arias would be a wise decision by the club.
