Why Rangers should make a move for Isaac Atanga

According to Kickgh (h/t Daily Record), Rangers are interested in signing FC Nordsjaelland starlet Isaac Atanga in the summer to bolster their attack.

Atanga, 20, started with the Right to Dream Academy in his homeland, Ghana, and joined Nordsjaelland’s U19 side in the summer of 2018. In 32 games for the Danish outfit’s U19 and reserve sides, he excelled with 16 goals and 7 assists and was promoted to the senior set-up last summer. And his rise to the top has been rather swift.

He was a regular member of the squad in the 2019/20 season and impressed with his eye-catching displays that belies his tender age. Thus, Rangers should attempt to sign the winger, who could be available for less than €9m, as per the report.

Rangers, meanwhile, were once again the second-best team in Scotland. Despite having a healthy squad, Steven Gerrard’s men fell 13 points short of the league title. They haven’t won a trophy under the former Liverpool legend yet.

However, with the transfer window open for business, the manager should look to bring in reinforcements if they are to do better in the future. And for that to happen, Rangers should rope in youngsters and groom them for the future.

Atanga could provide depth to Rangers’ flanks

Having already made a few signings in Ianis Hagi and Calvin Bassey, the Gers need to bolster their attacking unit. They are already at risk of losing star forward Alfredo Morelos and English veteran Jermaine Defoe could miss the start of the new campaign due to an injury.

In the wide areas, Ryan Kent is the only establish winger available. Jamie Murphy, Jordan Jones, Brandon Baker and Glenn Middleton haven’t featured much in the 2019/20 campaign and they cannot be depended upon for consistency. Thus, bringing in a winger is a must ahead of the start of the campaign.

In that regard, Atanga would be a suitable option for the club. The Ghanaian youngster has had a major breakthrough campaign, scoring 7 goals and providing 4 assists in 25 Superligaen games. He has portrayed immense quality and can be a crucial player for the Gers in the future.

His inclusion would definitely provide them with some much-needed depth and under the guidance of Gerrard, he can develop into a future star for Rangers. He needs experience to reach a higher level and the manager can get the best out of him by handing him the right opportunities.

Verdict

Despite having plenty of options on the wings, signing another winger would only help in improving the squad depth. And Atanga, who has been influential for the Danish outfit so far, can only get better with regular game time. Thus, the Scottish giants should attempt to lure him to Ibrox this summer.
