Why Rangers should make a move for Curtis Jones

According to The Scotsman, Rangers have targeted Liverpool starlet Curtis Jones to boost their midfield options ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Jones, 19, is a product of the Liverpool youth academy and despite still being registered as a U23 player for the Reds, he has made his senior bow. He is one of the most exciting young talents in the country and his rise from the youth sides has been incredible.

The youngster has been in fine form for both the U23 and the senior sides. However, he has been getting limited opportunities with the first-team. And therefore, Rangers must take the opportunity to sign Jones in this window.

Steven Gerrard’s men have failed to match the expectations in the latter stages of the league. They have faltered in the race for the Premiership title after putting up a good fight earlier in the campaign. Despite having a good attacking unit and backline, the Gers lost the plot in between.

They are currently 13 points behind rivals Celtic and are also on the verge of exiting from the Europa League after a 3-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of the Last 16 stage. However, regardless of their situation by the end of this season, Gerrard should focus on strengthening the team if they have to progress in further campaigns.

One area which needs reinforcements is the midfield position. Scott Arfield, Joe Aribo, Ryan Jack and Steven Davies are the only central midfielders available at the manager’s disposal. However, Davies is already 35 and has just one year left on his contract with the club.

Therefore, signing Curtis in the summer would add some much needed depth in the middle of the park. Jones is one of the most talented youngsters in England and has already shown glimpses of his brilliance this season. He has featured in 8 games under Jurgen Klopp and scored a stunning winner against Everton in the FA Cup.

The teenager also has the quality of scoring despite being a midfielder. In 27 games across all competitions for senior and reserve teams, he has already racked up 16 goals and 7 assists. His goalscoring abilities would be a boost for Rangers next season if he joins them. Given his versatilitly, the Liverpool starlet would provide multiple options to the manager as well.

Verdict

At 19, Jones already has experience of playing at a higher level and the Gers should enjoy the best out of him in the years to come. He would definitely add depth to their midfield contingent. Thus, Rangers must try hard and lure Jones to Ibrox in the summer.
