Why Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Manchester City would bolster their midfield

According to Daily Record, Manchester City are interested in signing Southampton star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the summer.

Hojbjerg, 24, spent time at the academies of BK Skjold, FC Kopenhagen, and Brondby before joining Bayern Munich’s reserve side. He was immediately promoted to the Bavarians’ senior team by then-manager Pep Guardiola when he was just 17 years old.

However, he struggled to get regular game time and was sent on loan to Augsburg and Schalke before joining the Saints in the summer of 2016. Since his arrival at the South coast club, he has integrated himself into a key player of the squad and also earned the captain’s armband from Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The midfielder has been consistent over the years and has been a vital cog in Southampton’s good run of form in recent times. The report also suggests that Tottenham are keen on the midfielder.

Hojbjerg could add depth and quality to City’s midfield

Guardiola’s men haven’t been dominant throughout the campaign as they were in the previous years. They have failed to defend the title and are a long way below Liverpool in the league table. Their defence has let them down and the manager should first and foremost, bring in defensive reinforcements if they are to do well in the next campaign.

Apart from a defensive signing, the manager should also bring in new faces to the midfield position. City have a plethora of midfield talents in their ranks but those numbers could be reduced. David Silva is on the verge of moving away from Etihad and Fernandinho, who is already 35, has just one more year left on his contract with the club.

The Brazilian has also rarely been used in midfield this season and he has not had the best of the campaigns. Thus, a midfielder is a must in the summer.

In that regard, signing Hojbjerg would be a boost for the squad. The Danish international has been consistent for the Saints over the last few years and has also led his team brilliantly despite being just 24. His numbers may not be outstanding as he is mainly used in a defensive midfield role, whilst he is also capable of playing in a higher position.

The Dane’s inclusion to Guardiola squad would definitely bring in healthy competition to the squad. He is vastly experienced at just the age of 24 and this could come in handy for the Cityzens.

Verdict

The former Bayern Munich man has a long way to go in his career and his best is yet to come. At the same time, City need to inject their midfield with young blood and Hojbjerg would be suitable for the club. Thus, they should manage to lure the Denmark midfielder to Etihad this summer and he could go on to represent them in the long run.
