Why Nottingham Forest should sign Che Adams on loan in January

According to The Athletic (h/t Nottinghamshire Live), Nottingham Forest are interested in acquiring the services of Southampton striker Che Adams on loan when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Reds are keen to bolster their striking options during the mid-season trading period and have set their sights on the 23-year-old former Ilkeston protege, who earned a big-money move to the Premier League from Birmingham City this past summer. (h/t Nottinghamshire Live)

Adams, though, is not the only striker on Forest’s radar heading into the mid-season trading period. Newcastle United star Dwight Gayle has also been linked with a loan move to the City Ground in January while out-of-favour Brighton hitman Glen Murray is also on Sabri Lamouchi’s wishlist. The Leicester-born forward, who plundered 22 goals for Birmingham City in the EFL Championship last season, was widely tipped to make the step up to the Premier League this term following his move to Southampton.

However, things have hardly gone according to the script for the former non-league star this season, with Adams failing to register a single goal or an assist in 13 Premier League appearances for the Saints.

The 23-year-old’s failure to make an immediate impact in the top-flight has seen him slip down the pecking order at St. Mary’s under the stewardship of Ralph Hasenhuttl, who hasn’t handed Adams a league start since mid-September.

To that end, bringing in a few fresh faces in January could be a step in the right direction and a new striker should be atop the club’s transfer agenda, with Lewis Grabban the only reliable option in front of goal.

Grabban is currently the top-scorer with ten goals but with Wolves loanee, Rafa Mir, failing to make a big impact and teenager Brennan Johnson still very much unproven at this level, Forest are crying out for alternatives up top to deliver the goods week in, week out.

To put things into perspective, Forest certainly need to bring in a new striker during the mid-season trading period and Che Adams fits the bill as a proven goalscorer in the English second-tier, having finished the 2018-19 season as one of the highest goal contributors in the EFL Championship.

Verdict

Things haven’t really clicked for Adams at Southampton and while it might be too early to write him off at the Premier League level, a temporary move back to the Championship could help him regain his confidence.

Looking at the potential move from a tactical point of view, the arrival of Adams midway through the season could possibly add another dimension to Forest’s attack. The 23-year-old’s pace and power, coupled with his previous goalscoring exploits in the Championship, would definitely hand a boost to Lamouchi’s options up top.

Suffice to say, Che Adams to the City Ground in January seems to have all the makings of a blockbuster move as the Reds look to end their long exile from the Premier League with a much-awaited promotion.
