Why Norwich City loaning out Tom Trybull doesn’t make sense

According to The Pink’Un, Norwich City midfielder Tom Trybull has joined Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers on a season-long loan deal.

The 27-year-old had been deemed surplus to requirements by manager Daniel Farke following the Canaries’ relegation from the Premier League last season. The German didn’t feature in any of Norwich’s five games in all competitions before the international break and has now switched boats to join the Lancashire outfit in search of more game time.

Tom Trybull started his professional career with Hansa Rostock in the lower echelons of German football before completing a move to Werder Bremen, where he made 21 appearances in the Bundesliga. The midfielder had brief stints at Greuther Furth and St. Pauli in his homeland before going on to play for ADO Den Haag in the Dutch top-flight.

The former Germany U-20 international completed a move to Norwich City in the summer of 2017. He played a significant role as the Canaries won the Championship title in the following season to secure promotion. Trybull featured prominently in the top-flight last season, starting 14 games, but wasn’t able to save the club from relegation.

Trybull’s departure could come back to bite Norwich

Trybull had been a key squad player for Daniel Farke over the past three seasons, not only in the Championship but also in the Premier League. The German enforcer started as many as 53 league games for the Canaries during that period, which clearly lies testament to those claims.

However, his sudden fall in grace from one of the mainstays of Norwich’s midfield to a glorified benchwarmer has been quite surprising, to say the least. Trybull was completely frozen out of the first-team mix following the club’s relegation from the top-flight. He failed to make the matchday squads for any of Norwich’s five opening games in all competitions this season.

Granted, Norwich have an abundance of central midfielders, with Kenny McLean, Mario Vrancic, Alex Tettey, Oliver Skipp, and Lukas Rupp all competing for places in the middle of the park. However, it is imperative to say that the Canaries would still have benefitted from retaining the services of Trybull, who remains a player with proven pedigree in the Championship.

The 27-year-old is still at a good age and would certainly have played a part later on in the campaign. Tettey is well past his prime at 34 while Tottenham loanee Oliver Skipp is still trying to feel his way into top-level football.

Verdict

Weakening yourself and strengthening your rivals isn’t the smartest idea after all and Norwich would be left red-faced if Tom Trybull ends up helping Blackburn Rovers secure a higher finish in the Championship at the end of the season. Loaning him out to a foreign club would, perhaps, have been a better idea.
