Why Nicolas Gonzalez would be a fantastic signing for Tottenham

According to The Athletic (subscription required) via Express, Tottenham are said to have held talks regarding a January move for Nicolas Gonzalez. The VfB Stuttgart youngster has impressed with his goal-scoring prowess this season attracting the attention of clubs such as Spurs and Juventus.

It is also being said that an offer of around €30million could be what Stuttgart are looking for Gonzalez.

Tottenham need some depth in the attack

A lot was expected of Gareth Bale’s return to the side. He was seen as the world-class player who could push Spurs to the next level. It has been anything but. Bale was slowly eased into the side but in the chances that he has been afforded, he has produced nothing of substance. Instead, it has been a familiar case of fitness issues.

It was only due to the splendid efforts of Kane and Son that Spurs have performed well in the season so far. Spurs need one more player who can complete their attack and ease the burden on the aforementioned duo. Nicolas Gonzalez has been one such player for VfB Stuttgart this season.

Nicolas Gonzalez can be a fine addition to the Tottenham attack

The 22-year-old has shown strong signs of promise in the Bundesliga this season after excelling in the German second-tier last term. That he has already been capped by Argentina at the international level further underlines his impressive progress over the past 12 months.

Predominantly a left-footed left-winger by trade, Gonzalez has the versatility to switch to a wide attacking role on the right, while he can also operate as a centre-forward. With most of Spurs’ wingers being flexible enough to operate on either side of the striker, Gonzalez would have no problem in finding a position that would suit him.

Suffice to say, a potential deal for Nicolas Gonzalez in January would offer Tottenham some much-needed variety and quality in their attack. The Argentine international still has his best years ahead of him at 22. He would surely benefit hugely from playing under Jose Mourinho.

At €30million, he looks like a really good long-term investment for the club. Spurs should do all they can to secure Gonzalez’s signing in January to boost their attack and make a real statement at the end of the season.
