Why Newcastle United should sign Jetro Willems permanently

According to Daily Mail, Newcastle United are considering signing left-back Jetro Willems on a permanent basis once his loan spell ends in the summer.

Willems, 25, came through Sparta Rotterdam’s youth ranks and was with PSV Eindhoven for 6 years. His impressive performances earned him a move to Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt. He was a regular member of the squad and helped the club reach the semi-finals of the Europa League last season.

The Magpies signed him on loan last summer and he had done well for the Premier League side before he injured his ligament. He has been one of the best players for Newcastle this term and has made a good start to life in England’s top-flight.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce’s men returned to winning ways in the league as they defeated Southampton last weekend after a 5-match winless streak. They are currently 13th in the league standings, just 8 points away from the Europa League qualification spot and are hoping for a higher place finish at the end of the campaign.

The Toon have endured with the conundrum of an established left-back ever since Jose Enrique left the club. At the moment they have Willems, Paul Dummett and Danny Rose. Welshman Dummett has been out of action for the majority of the season and Willems rightly took his chances and started growing within the club.

However, his injury forced the manager to sign Rose from Tottenham. The Englishman hasn’t been at his best despite getting enough opportunities and nothing is sure of his commitment to the club. Therefore, Bruce should look to sign the former Eindhoven man on a permanent basis.

The 25-year-old has already scored 2 goals and notched up two assists in 19 league games. He has a better record than Dummett and Rose this term and should be seen as a player for the future. He was at his best against Manchester United earlier in the campaign and is capable of doing well for the Tyneside team.

A left-back by trade, Willems is capable of operating in the midfield as well and could come in handy for the manager when he returns fit and hale. He has shown promises of succeeding in the Premier League and the manager should be able to get the best out of him.

Verdict

With Dummett having just two years left on his contract with the club, the Magpies should exercise the buy-back option for the Netherlands international and keep him at the club. He could be a valuable asset to the team in the future as he is just 25 and has a lot more to offer.

Therefore, signing the 25-year-old on a permanent basis could pay off handsomely for the manager and the club.
