Why Newcastle United should revive their interest in Felipe Caicedo

Back in March, Ecuagol (h/t Chronicle Live), credited Newcastle United with an interest in signing Lazio forward Felipe Caicedo.

The Magpies have endured mixed results throughout the season and have struggled to enter into the top half of the table in the last two months. But Steve Bruce’s men have managed to do a decent job since mid-February.

However, they still remain out of the top half in the 13th position in the league table after a 5-0 loss to Manchester City on Wednesday. One of the major reasons for their poor performance is the lack of consistency in front of goal.

Summer signing Joelinton has scored just two league goals throughout the campaign and is completely out of form. Whereas, Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto have been out of the team for the majority of the season and haven’t contributed much.

Former Crystal Palace man Dwight Gayle has failed to impress in the few chances he has gotten and has scored just 2 goals in the league this term. With a less-productive forward line, Magpies boss Steve Bruce should look to strengthen his attacking unit before the new season commences.

Caicedo – A short-term solution to bolster Newcastle’s attack

In that regard, Felipe Caicedo should be prioritized as he has been in good form this season despite playing second-fiddle to Lazio’s top scorer Ciro Immobile.

The 31-year-old has scored 9 goals in the league this season in 25 league games. He can be a good addition to Newcastle if he is able to continue with the same form.

A veteran of 440 appearances, in which he has scored 109 goals, Caicedo is enjoying one of his most productive seasons at the moment. His inclusion would also bring in a healthy competition within the team, which has scored only 36 goals – the least in the Premier League so far.

Verdict

Though Caicedo is 31, he still has some years left to play at a higher level. He can be a solid short-term addition for Newcastle, at least for a year or two. Thus, the Magpies reigniting their interest in the Ecuadorian international would be a wise decision.
