Why Marcos Alonso to Newcastle United would be a good move

According to The Mirror (h/t The Sun), Newcastle United are interested in signing Chelsea full-back Marcos Alonso in the summer.

Alonso, 29, is a product of Real Madrid’s youth system. Ever since he left the Castilla in the summer of 2010 with Bolton Wanderers, he has been in English football except for a short loan spell with Fiorentina.

The Spaniard’s impressive performance in the 2015/16 Serie A season earned him a move to Chelsea. He became an instant hit at Stamford Bridge and was a regular member of the squad until last season. However, under Frank Lampard, his opportunities have been limited and the report suggests that the £100,000-a-week star could be on his way out of the club at the end of the season.

Newcastle have struggled in terms of both the attack and the defence. While Bruce’s men have scored just 25 goals in 29 games, they have conceded 41 goals so far. And both the numbers don’t sound for good reading. Thus, after finalizing the takeover talks, the manager should bring in reinforcements to form a good squad for next season.

Alonso’s experience could be key at the back for Newcastle

One area which the manager should focus on strengthening is the left-back position. Matt Ritchie is the only player available at left-back for the Magpies. Danny Rose and Jetro Willems are on loan and they could return to their parent clubs when the contract ends.

Thus, a left-back is a must in the summer. In that regard, signing Alonso would be a massive boost for the squad. He has made over 140 appearances for the Blues and has managed to rack up 22 goals and 17 assists, which shows he is capable of doing well in the attack.

Though he has missed the majority of the 2019/20 campaign, he has managed to score 4 goals and provide 3 assists in 11 league games. And he was brilliant in the last few games before the suspension, especially against Tottenham. He has spent most of his career in English football and his experience could be handy for the Magpies.

Verdict

With a lack of options, Newcastle are in dire need of left-backs and Alonso could provide them with much-needed depth at the backline. He would also bring healthy competition within Bruce’s squad. Thus, they should make a move for the 3-cap Spaniard and lure him to St. James’ Park this summer.
